I was feeling anxious about a meeting with a family member a while ago. It felt right to meet and work together on this day to help them out, but the history between us challenged my hope. Praying about it, I felt utterly unable to do this in my own strength. What I mean by that, is that I had no idea how to make this meeting work well. It wasn’t as if I hadn’t tried before and had failed.
I decided that the only way I could manage was to surrender completely to the Holy Spirit and follow his leading at every step, intentionally in every minute of talking and doing. In this situation I knew that if I took a misstep, it could end up with division yet again.
So, tuned in and listening to Holy Spirit, I did what I sensed the Holy Spirit saying: sometimes it was to listen to what they were saying and do what they were suggesting, even if I internally disagreed. At other moments, it was to go ahead with what I was thinking of as the right direction.
The miracle was a peaceful productive day working together. Wow, I was so grateful. We both were. Thank you, Holy Spirit for your wisdom.
Unity required of me humility, gentleness, patience, bearing with one another in love and being eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace and hope rose with that (Ephesians 4:1-6). These are all fruit from the Holy Spirit. Following where Holy Spirit leads brings hope into situations that feel hopeless. Praying peace and hope over all you and in your workplaces.
